Geopolitical Outlook 2020 Meeting Retrospective

PARC members gathered at Eversheds Sutherland on 28 January 2020 to discuss the Geopolitical Outlook – what should we expect, and how will it affect us? Attendees were treated to an insightful and wide-ranging presentation by Professor Amelia Hadfield, Chair in European and International Relations and Head of Department of Politics at the University of Surrey.

Amelia covered topics including:

• an update on climate change discussions at the recent World Economic Forum meeting

• an assessment of the US economy, the presidential election campaign, and evolving relationships between the US, China, Russia and the Middle East

• an update on EU foreign policy, trade and the European economy in the light of Brexit and the changing of the guard at the European Commission under von der Leyen

• a relatively upbeat analysis of the UK economy, and predictions on the outcomes of stage 2 of the Brexit trade agreement negotiations

• the precarious political and economic situation in South Africa
